Helmet Padding

Your helmet padding is important for both comfort and safety. To get the maximum enjoyment and safety out of your helmet you need to take correct care of your padding and helmet lining.

Helmet odors?

There is nothing worse than having to put on a smelly crash helmet! Perhaps your helmet has got damp and odors have developed? Perhaps you do a lot of energy intensive off-road ridiing. Perhaps you haven't cleaned your helmet since you bought it, you would not be alone! Odors can develop in any manner of ways, they will make your riding experience less enjoyable but fortunately there are ways to reduce or eliminate odors.

Dirt, mud or dust on your padding?

During normal riding and especially during off-road riding you can expect your helmet padding to get dirty. It is important to clean your helmet padding so that you do not shorten the useful life of your helmet and to maintain an enjoyable riding experience.

How to clean your helmet padding?

As with all parts in your helmet we recommend you avoid using strong chemicals.

You can either hand wash or machine wash removable padding, if you are machine washing we recommend you use a washing bag to reduce the risk of damage. Use a neutral cleaning agent similar to what you would use for delicate clothing.

Non-removable padding can be hand washed with a soft damp cloth. Dab and lightly rub your padding with the damp cloth, use a neutral cleaning agent if odors are an issue.

Are there products specifically designed for cleaning crash helmet lining and padding?

If you feel that the above techniques won't work for you, or if you are looking for more sophisticated methods of helmet cleaning, then yes there are products which you can use.

There are a number of different brands which you can find online or at your local motorcycle dealership. Most products are spray on, which makes them quick and easy to use. Simply spray the product on, wipe it around a little, then dab off the excess and allow the helmet padding to dry. You will find pump and aerosol bottles, either work its just personal choice.
