Speakers Helmet

Why would you want helmet audio?

Motorcycling is traditionally a solo, independent, almost lonely past time - but does it have to be?

With recent developments in communications technology it is now more feasible than ever to share your experiences verbally with your pillion, another motorcycle rider or even your family at home while riding.

Wireless technology like 'bluetooth' has made leaps and bounds, cell phone use is everywhere and cellular plans are just getting cheaper and cheaper. So yes, motorcycling no longer has to be a solo, quiet experience.

You can now share your experiences in real time with whomever you want, whenever you want! The capabilities extend even further than communication with people, you can listen to music, the audio instructions of your GPS unit, and much much more.

Speakers Helmet - Limitations to watch out for

o   Bluetooth
Since this is a wireless system the main advantage is that you don't have to mess around with any cabling when getting on and off the bike and taking on and off your helmet. However the main limitation is that you cannot use your motorcycles battery to power your communication, battery life will be limited, after which you will need to charge the unit.

o   Wired
This system will work as long as your motorcycle has power in its battery, however you will need to mess around with wiring when taking on and off your helmet. This system also takes more initial setting up as you will need to mount it on your motorcycle and connect it to your battery. Note that individual devices will vary in the complexity of setup.

In general you should also note that volume levels can vary between speakers helmet models and the features can vary also, so if you really want to be able to listen to music, and also potentially communicate with a pillion you need to ensure the device you are considering can do both.

Where to buy

It can be hard to find motorcycle retailers with a wide range of motorcycle intercom devices so it pays to call around first and see what the shops near you have to offer. You will also find speakers helmet devices on websites and online marketplaces like eBay. However you should naturally be careful about buying a second hand device, especially if it is Bluetooth based as the battery life can greatly depend on how well the battery is cared for.
